Top 4 Creative Ways to Style Men’s Huarache Sandals

Top 4 Fresh And Fashionable Ways To Wear Men’s Huarache Sandals

Men’s Huarache sandals have endured the test of time, transitioning from classic to contemporary, and have recently experienced a surge in popularity. These distinctively styled, Mexican-inspired sandals go with every summer outfit thanks to their wide range of hues, textures, and innovative designs.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the art of styling men’s Huarache sandals.

1. Fine-looking Summer Casual

Huarache sandals are the ideal footwear option for a laid-back summer look. Your best bets in this situation are linen or light cotton chinos. Cuff your jeans or make sure they don’t break on the Huaraches for a neater appearance. The separation between the trousers and sandals will be lovely as a result. Choose a muted hue like brown or black huaraches to go with the outfit’s minimalism.

2. Dress It Up

Huarache sandals can also be made more elegant for a formal setting. Use them with chinos or linen pants and a collared shirt for a polished appearance. Pick a Huarache sandal with a simple design and a few embellishments for a refined look. Get a summer, unlined blazer, a simple top in a nice color, and a pair of wider or relaxed-fit linen slacks. The end effect is a comfortable appearance that pays homage to European design.

3. Beach-Ready In The Summer

A day at the beach is ideal for wearing huarache sandals. Use them together with a tank top and swim trunks for a casual yet fashionable beach look. Get a Huarache sandal with a thicker sole for more comfort on the sand. Wear your Huarache sandals with a woven belt or straw hat for a complete summer style. To let the Huarache sandals shine, keep the accessories to a minimum.

4. Hats

Any ensemble is elevated to new levels of style by their seamless ability to complement one another. An enticing pairing is fedora hats with huarache sandals. This pair never fails to impress with a variety of brim colors and sizes. Get a medium-sized, neutral-colored fedora hat to go with your huaraches for the ideal combination.

To Wind Things Up

Huarache sandals are pretty versatile, going with various outfits easily as you put them on and start wearing them daily. Even though these Mexican sandals aren’t your usual go-to style, don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone. They won’t just give your appearance a dash of individuality; your feet will also appreciate the supreme comfort they offer.

At Brand X Huaraches, each and every pair is meticulously crafted by hand, with a single, unbroken strand of leather woven right into the insole. This level of craftsmanship and attention to detail sets us apart as the best huarache makers in the world.

Comfort Is Key

The coziness of huaraches is one of their outstanding features. Huaraches are made to support and cushion your feet, unlike other types of summer footwear. Even on the hottest days, your feet will remain cool and dry thanks to the woven leather structure. Versatile Styling

Huaraches are incredibly fashionable and functional. They come in a variety of hues and patterns and look great with shorts, sundresses, and other clothing. How to Make Huarache Sandals

Huarache sandals originated in Mexico thousands of years ago, before the European colonization of Mexico. Traditionally worn in rural communities, huaraches grew in popularity throughout Mexico due to the sturdy nature and easy accessibility of materials used to make them. Today, huarache sandals are worn all over the Americas and not just in Mexico.
Traditional huaraches are handmade and come in many different styles. Yet, the most basic kind is a minimalist sandal made by weaving a single strip of leather through holes in the sole and binding the foot to the sandal with the leather.
You can make DIY huarache sandals even if you have no experience in shoemaking.
Follow the instructions below on how to make huarache sandals.

These instructions were adapted from two tutorials on Instructables.com. The tutorial below is a hybrid of the two, with modifications made for clarity where necessary. To view the original tutorials, visit Minimalist Running Sandals (Huaraches) and Vibram Huarache Running/Hiking Sandals. Photo credit belongs to the authors of the original tutorials.

Materials

To make your own huaraches, you need the following:

  • Parachute cord, about 6 feet for each sandal
  • Thin rubber material easily cut with scissors or a box cutter
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Box cutter
  • Hammer
  • 4mm hole punch that you can use on leather or other soft materials

Making Huarache Sandals

Create a Template of Your Foot

  1. With your foot on a piece of paper, hold a pen or marker perpendicular to the paper and loosely trace along the edges of your foot, creating an outline.
  2. Before removing your foot from the tracing, mark the three holes where the string will go.
    • The first hole is on the inside of the foot, just in front of your ankle bone. Make a mark at that spot beside your foot.
    • The second hole is on the outside of the foot, also just in front of the ankle bone, roughly in line with the first hole. Make a mark at that spot beside your foot.
    • The third hole is between your big toe and second toe. Make a mark between those two toes at the start of the gap between them.
  3. Remove your foot and transfer the side marks onto the template.
  4. Using your pen or marker, round out the contours of the tracing, creating a smoother-looking sandal shape.
  5. If you have different-sized feet, repeat these steps for your other foot, creating a template for each foot.

Transfer the Template to the Rubber Material

  1. With a piece of chalk, trace your template onto the sheet of rubber on the side that will be touching your foot’s bottom.
  2. Cut out the shape using a box cutter or pair of scissors.
  3. Before removing the template from the rubber, mark both ankle hole locations on the rubber. Then, use a pen to punch through the paper to denote the hole between the toes with chalk.

Punch-Out the Holes

  1. Use a hammer and a 4mm hole punch to punch the holes. If you don’t have a hole punch, you can use a nail or a drill with a small bit. The cleaner the gap is, the less likely the rubber will tear.
  2. Punch out the hole between the toes directly on the marking you placed on the sole earlier.
  3. Punch out the side holes about 1 cm from the edge of the sandal. This space between the edge of the sole and the hole is important for making sure the lacing doesn’t tear through the rubber. For larger feet, add slightly more than a 1cm buffer.
  4. Repeat these steps for the second sandal.

Lace-Up Your Huaraches

  1. Tie a knot on one end of the parachute cord.

  2. Starting with the LEFT SANDAL: With the bottom of the sandal facing up, use a pen or needle-nose pliers to help push the loose end of the cord (without the knot) down through the hole that goes between your big toe and second toe. Pull the line through until the knot is flush with the rubber.

  3. Flip the sandal over so that the side that will touch your foot is facing you. Then, loop the parachute cord around the outside edge of the sole and pull it up through the bottom of the outer side hole.

  4. Loop the parachute cord around and back in front of itself.

  5. Bring the parachute cord around the heel to create the heel strap of the sandal. Then thread the parachute cord down through the inner side hole and loop it back and around to secure the strap (see picture below).

Tie Up Your Huaraches
From here, you can customize your own huaraches by trying a variety of tying styles, but the basic way of tying these up is as follows:

  1. Slide your foot in with the top strap between your big toe and second toe (like a flip-flop) and slide the heel loop on. Leave the top strap a bit loose. Next, slip the parachute cord under the top strap and back down under the heel strap. Below is a picture of this completed step.

  2. Make a kind of knot by weaving the parachute cord under the bottom strap of the two inner straps created from step 1 (see photos below) and pulling it through. Next, bring the line around the back, creating a second heel strap.

  3. Form a knot by slipping the cord under the top outer strap, looping around and up through the bottom of the two heel straps (see photo on the left below), then run it under both of the top inside straps (see picture on the right below).

  4. Bring the cord around and under both of the top outside straps.
How to Make Huarache Sandals 17
  5. Make a loopy quick-release knot (you likely won’t be untying these).

  6. Take the excess and tie it off any way you prefer. Finally, cut off any extra cord. You’ve now completed one sandal! Repeat these steps for the second sandal.

How to Customize Huaraches

To customize your own huaraches, try a variety of tying styles. A simple search online will bring up some tutorials.
Experiment with different materials. You can use a strip of leather or other comfortable tying material for the straps. For the sole, you can try leather or any thin rubber material. You can even try an old rubber yoga mat if you don’t mind having a smooth outsole instead of a treaded one!
If you have flip-flops with broken straps, you can repurpose them and make huaraches out of the soles. In the original tutorial, Minimalist Running Sandals (Huaraches), the huaraches are made out of a car mat. Remember, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination!

Top Frequently Asked Questions about Huarache Sandals

If you own a pair of huarache sandals, you already know how versatile and comfortable they are! However, if you don’t already have a pair, you’ll want to run out a grab one by the time you finish this article!

Huarache sandals are a type of Mexican style shoe that are very old in their origin. Originally worn as far back as the Pre Columbian era, the word “huarache” actually means “sandal” in the Purépecha language. The earliest forms of these shoes are found as artifacts on the Yucatan peninsula. You may hear them referred to as Mexican huarache sandals or see advertisements for authentic Mexican huarache sandals.

Leather huarache sandals are the most traditional as this is the material they were originally made with. However, what makes them huarache sandals is the hand-woven structure around the foot.

Both men’s huarache sandals and women’s huarache sandals became very popular in the 1960s in the United States among hippies and then grew in popularity from there. Leather huarache sandals are very common now because they are comfortable and look good with almost any outfit.

If you are not familiar with Mexican huarache sandals or you are considering buying a pair of men’s huarache sandals or women’s huarache sandals, here are five of the most common questions that people ask about them:

What are Huaraches For?

They are shoes that are made for everyday wear. The shoes are made in such a way that your foot is forced into a natural gait, which is preferred, because an unnatural gait can cause pain in not only the feet, but the ankles, legs, and knees as well. Mexican huarache sandals also do a great job of allowing the foot to breathe but still protecting the sole from rocks, grasses, and debris.

Where are Huaraches Made?

Traditional huaraches are made in Mexico, but people can make them anywhere. The more important aspects are how it is made and what they are made from.

Are Huaraches in Style 2021?

Huarache sandals are always in style. They are a classic and traditional-looking shoe that has a very broad appeal. One of the best things about women’s huarache sandals is the fact that their timeless design means that they will never go out of style.

Are Huarache Sandals Comfortable?

In general, both men’s huarache sandals and women’s huarache sandals are comfortable shoes to wear. After all, that is one of the reasons that they are so popular and so many people are wearing them. However, keep in mind that you do need to get the fit right, and you have to break them in a bit (see below for more information on this).

What Can I Pair Huaraches With?

You can pair huarache sandals with anything that you want to. Women’s huarache sandals look great with pants, leggings, jeans, shorts, and even dresses. They tend to dress up or down depending on what you decide to wear with them. Men’s huarache sandals work the same way. Pair them with anything from shorts to a suit. The bottom line is that they will look right at home with whatever elements you choose.

How are Huaraches Supposed to Fit?

For those not as familiar with Mexican huarache sandals, this section will address how you go about finding the right fit, whether you are shopping for men’s huarache sandals or women’s huarache sandals. These are the most important questions about sizing, fit, and how you can wear your huaraches sandals.

  • Should I size up or down in huaraches?
Huaraches sandals run small on sizes. So you should size up when buying, especially online, where sizing can be difficult.
  • What size Mexican Huaraches should I get?
Most people who own them recommend that with men’s huarache sandals you go up one size from what you would wear in a sneaker. Similarly, most people who own them recommend that you go up a half size from what you would wear in a sneaker with women’s huarache sandals.
  • Do huaraches stretch out?
Traditional leather huaraches sandals do stretch a little bit. This is because the leather stretches over time and with wear.
  • How long does it take to break in huaraches?
With most huarache sandals, you will break them within a few times of wearing them. But, of course, this ultimately has a lot to do with how long you wear them each time and the amount of activity that you are doing in them.
  • Why are huaraches so tight?
Mexican huarache sandals are tight because they are made from leather, and they will stretch as you wear them. Try not to worry too much about this aspect. The great part of Mexican huarache sandals being made of leather is that they stretch and take their form from your foot.
  • How do you wear air Huaraches?
Air Huaraches are a style of Huaraches that are made like a sneaker in outer appearance. Whether you opt for men’s huarache sandals or women’s huarache sandals, they make a great running shoe and can be styled in the same way as a tennis shoe.
  • Can I wear huaraches in the rain?
While you can use a waterproofing spray to help avoid damage, because they are made of leather, both huarache sandals for women and huarache sandals for men are easily damaged in the rain. Not only can water hurt their look, but it will also hurt the feel of the shoe, allowing for too much of the wrong kind of stretching. In some cases, it can even make the leather harden.
  • Do huaraches have arch support?
Men’s huarache sandals, especially those made in the air style, will often have arch supports built-in, but you are far less likely to find that on huarache sandals with heels. Traditional huarache sandals are made to support a natural gait.
  • Are huaraches good in the snow?
No. Just like the rain, snow will cause water damage to the shoes, and they can not protect your feet from a deep snowfall.

Whichever option you choose, get a pair of Mexican huarache sandals today—your soles will thank you!
