Huaraches are reminiscent of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past and were worn by farmhands to protect their feet from the heat and terrain. While the original designs were meant for functionality, they later evolved to include elaborately and finely made sandals with leather soles. Making huaraches takes skill, time, and patience. The upper of the sandal consists of a single strip of leather that’s hand-woven into the sole until the entire surface is covered. This makes for a durable and attractive summer sandal.

Every women’s Mexican huarache design has a specific sequence of weave that’s impossible to replicate in mass-produced, factory-made footwear. These artisans have been weaving huaraches for several generations, and they know techniques like wetting and hammering that can make the sandals last longer and give you the perfect stretch. Even the quality of our leather makes a difference. Unlike factory-made women’s huarache flats, we only use vegetable-tanned leather because it’s incredibly soft and fits your feet perfectly.

I almost returned these huaraches, as the leather felt a bit stiff and I was worried they would rub blisters on my sensitive feet. Just as I was about to send them back, I decided to try wearing them around the house for a while first. I’m so glad I did! The leather does soften with use, and I now find them quite comfortable! Once I dared to wear them outside, I felt like I was getting away with wearing slippers in public, but with a nice sturdy sole. I’m now about to order a third pair so I’ll have several colors to choose from. The fact that these actually come in my size (I wear a women’s size 11, which is usually hard to find) is an added bonus. P.S. I’ll be taking one or two pairs with me on an upcoming trip to Mexico, which is ironic, but these are much better quality than any huaraches I’ve come across there (plus it’s hard to find my size in Mexico). My tumbled honey women’s hauraches arrived today, replacing a small size in rugged tan that I returned a week or so ago. These are lovely, a perfect fit, very comfortable, and even though I have narrow feet these are cut high enough to feel secure. I’ll be saving up for another pair next summer. So happy to find a high quality replacement to the hauraches I had for years and could never replace in years of looking.
